School Advisory Council (SAC) Meeting Minutes

February 18, 2020  5:30pm Media Center

Attendance:

Call to Order

A meeting of the Boone School Advisory Council was held in the school media center February 18, 2020.   Principal Dusty Johns called the meeting to order at 5:30pm.  Debra Wiley recorded the minutes.

 

Approval of Previous Minutes:  Ashlee Prior made a motion to accept the minutes as presented.  Angela Melvin seconded the motion; motion passed. 

 

Principal’s Report (Announcements/HR & Budget Updates) 

Organization Reports:  Jazmine Thermolice reported on Student Life.  Bravethon is this Saturday from 2pm to 6pm.  This is a student-only event.  $15,000 has been raised towards the goal of $25,000.  Green Up Boone will be February 29; all club members are required to participate.  Grad Bash tickets go on sale tomorrow through February 26.  Prom ticket sales will be March 30 to April 8.  Senior Olympics will be March 12; last Blood Drive will be April 14.

 Sean McCabe reported Principal’s Cabinet has narrowed its focus and will be working to help struggling students.  Brave Leaders student mentors will be paired with mentees based on demographics, common interests and extracurriculum.  

School Improvement Plan (Goal Updates)

  1. Survey Rates:Assistant Principal Dr. Tayler Bray reported how Boone is doing with the three surveys required for accreditation.Student and staff surveys have exceeded the requirements, but parents have only reached 5.47%.Efforts will be made to reach out to parents for more participation by the deadline in March.
  2. Campus Safety:Assistant Principal reported on campus safety, which is her priority.Drills are conducted monthly; active assailant drills are successful with students building confidence in their reaction time and knowledge.Safety corners and blind spot tape, as well as black out door window curtains are in place.Random metal detections are conducted at the direction of OCPS.
  3. Discipline:Mrs. Fink reported that campus safety goes hand in hand with student discipline.She leads a great team of four deans, who have a specific alpha block but are willing to speak to any student.The OCPS Code of Conduct is reviewed quarterly, along with PSAs offered by video providing instruction on discipline concerns.HERO is program that records infractions as well as giving points for positive behavior.

New Business

  1. Mental Health Overview:This program began earlier this month.The state mandated five hours of instruction; OCPS Board made decision to use Kognito curriculum.Dr. Bray did a lesson overview.Two modules have been completed covering mental health resources and suicide.Three remaining lessons will cover coping strategies, mental health disorders, ending with an overview discussing how to deal with stress.

  1. Perform functions prescribed by regulations of the district school board, but not have any powers and duties reserved by law to the school board
  2. Assist in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of the school improvement plan
  3. Assist principal in preparation of school’s annual budget and plan
  4. Identify the appropriate use of school improvement dollars for implementing the approved school improvement plan, if funds are available from the Florida Department of Education

Call to Order

A meeting of the Boone School Advisory Council was held in the school media center November 19, 2019.   Principal Dusty Johns called the meeting to order at 5:30pm.  Debra Wiley recorded the minutes.

Jose Garrido made a motion to accept the minutes as presented.  Peggy Hoffman seconded the motion; motion passed. 

 

Principal’s Report (Announcements/HR & Budget Updates) 

  1. Organization Reports: Jazmine Thermolice reported on student events.Thanksgiving baskets are being distributed this week, with the Canned Food Drive beginning December 2.Brave Aid is scheduled for January 17; Dance Marathon will be February 22.Seniors will gather early on December 4 prior to Senior Breakfast to initiate a new tradition, Senior Sunrise.Other future activities include Pennies for Patients by Freshman class, Green Up Boone February 29 and Elections. PTSO is short 38 members to reach a new record.Foundation had a successful golf tournament and is planning a Holiday Mixer.
  2. Staffing: Timothy Livingston and Robert Kantz have joined Boone faculty, replacing Ms. Manigo and Mrs. Fincham. Resource teacher Brittany Pinto will be taking on more roles in the student services department.
  3. Construction: No updates; gym construction continues.800 building transition will begin in March.

 

School Improvement Plan (Goal Updates)

College Board OSP: Dr. Bray briefed members on College Board’s OSP program, which is being conducted through ELA classes.Juniors and Seniors are eligible for OSP scholarships through Khan Academy.$10,000 has been awarded to Boone students thus far.

  1. Honors Breakfast: Mr. Serrano reported Progress Reports were distributed to students today.Students with a D or F will be monitored closely; parent phone calls will be made.Students with a 3.5 GPA will be recognized with the Honors Breakfast on December 5.Invitations will go out later this week.
  2. Gen Wow: Dr. Bray reported that 35 girls went to the Gen Wow conference today.Participants were able to make connections with female leaders in their areas of interest.Boone has its own Gen Wow Club, sponsored by Ms. DeJesus.
  3. Course Registration: Mr. Serrano explained improvements to course registration.Student services is working on a digital curriculum guide to provide more detailed information on specific classes to be made available in January.Grade level course selections will be used so students can only request classes that are appropriate for their grade level.
  4. Yale Survey: Mr. Johns reported that Boone has been selected to participate in a Yale survey, which would bring in a $5000 grant.
  5. Graduation Date: Boone will graduate the Class of 2020 on Saturday, May 23 at 7:30 pm in the UCF Arena.
