We have made it to the midpoint of Quarter Three and progress reports will be available on Family Access on February 12 ( Short video for parents on how to access if needed). This week is a great opportunity to sit down with your student and reflect on their coursework this nine weeks and ask if they have committed to excellence in their academics. If they have, encourage them to continue on the path they are on, and if they have come a little short, encourage them to speak with their teachers and develop a plan to move towards academic excellence. To aid with understanding where your student is academically at this time, we will be hosting Brave Connections on Wednesday, February 11, from 1:20 pm to 2:40 pm. This is a great opportunity to connect with your students teachers to ensure a plan for your student's success.
This Tuesday, February 10, we are celebrating World Heart Day. All 9th and 11th grade students will report to the gym with their ELA class to learn hands-only CPR. We are appreciative for our community first responders who will be on campus teaching students this valuable life-saving skill!
Finally, please join me in once again congratulating the Boone Teacher of the Year, Ms. Scott and the Boone Support Person of the Year, Mr. Fieler (pictured above). They both represent the best of Boone. They are Forever Brave!
As always, thank you for reading!
Forever Brave,
Hector Maestre, Ed.D.

A huge thank you to our School Counselors and our entire Student Services Team for all they do to guide our Braves through high school! While many of us grew up calling them "guidance counselors," the role has evolved significantly. Today’s school counselors are certified educators who address students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development needs. They are the bridge between home and school, the advocates for student equity, and the steady hand during life’s inevitable ups and downs.
This is the perfect time to say thank you to your school counselor. A quick email, a handwritten note, or a simple "thanks for all you do" in the hallway goes a long way in recognizing their dedication.

Connectivity day is a day for students to connect with each other over shared interests. For the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students of Boone, this day was spent at a Deaf Life Panel. Mrs. Asher and Mrs. Strange arranged three Deaf adult community members to come to Boone to talk with the students about life after high school for Deaf adults.
Kumar Singh, Michael Stewart, and Susan Stewart volunteered to come to Boone to speak with our students. They shared about their experiences growing up Deaf, their college experiences, and life lessons they have learned since graduating college. They encouraged the students to purse their interests, try new things, and get involved in the community. The students also asked questions they had about life after high school and navigating a hearing world as a Deaf adult. It was a great experience for both the students, the teacher, the interpreters, and the volunteers. Many thanks to these amazing volunteers for their time and dedication to the next generation!

We proudly celebrated 250 years of literacy in America with engaging events in our media center! Students explored and checked out key American texts that have shaped our nation, bringing history and literacy to life through hands-on interaction. The celebration also included fun, creative activities hosted by our media specialist, Ms. Hutsell, making the experience both educational and memorable for all.

Jenn Hilley has spent decades doing far more than teaching English. She has helped students find their voice. She has created space for expression, growth, and understanding at moments when students needed it most. Her classroom is a place where stories matter, where challenges are acknowledged, and where young people are encouraged to speak up, write boldly, and believe that their voice has value.
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Hilley has been a steady bridge between students, staff, and the Boone Foundation. As a longtime board member, she brought insight, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to making sure all students, especially those who are often overlooked, were seen and supported.
It feels only fitting that her legacy live on in the form of a scholarship that reflects those values.
We are proud to introduce The Jenn Hilley “Finding Your Voice” Scholarship.
This scholarship will be awarded to a Boone senior who demonstrates resilience, growth, and the courage to express themselves, whether through writing, learning, leadership, or self-advocacy. It honors students who have used education as a way to build confidence, overcome challenges, and step into who they are becoming.
Through this scholarship, Ms. Hilley’s impact will continue, not just in the lives she has already shaped, but in the lives of students she may never meet, who will carry forward the confidence to speak, to write, and to be heard.
Ms. Hilley, thank you for your kindness, your advocacy, and the countless ways you have helped students find their voice. This scholarship is a reflection of your life’s work, and we are so proud to name it in your honor.

Money is everywhere right now for seniors that are looking to help pay for postsecondary options. Number 1 priority would be completing the FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid. https://studentaid.gov/ If students have not completed this form yet, they will be sent down from an elective to complete it with Mrs. Gurley starting on Monday. They will need to know their SSN. After their process is complete, the parent will receive an email in order to complete his/her portion. If a student does not have a SSN or the parent is unwilling to submit the FAFSA, here is a link for the student to complete https://tinyurl.com/FAFSAoptout2026 Please email nicole.gurley@ocps.net with any questions.
For scholarships, there are a ton out there right now, students just have to apply. They can stop in the College and Career Center for any assistance.
