Spanish instructor Patricia Scarlato, who has dedicatedly led her class and the Spanish Honors Society, steps down after six years of commitment to teaching and promoting Hispanic culture. “Personally, I will take this work at this institution as an experience not only professionally, but also personally,” she said, strengthening her connection to Latin American culture.
Scarlato’s departure marks the end of an era for many students who viewed her as both a mentor and a cultural guide. Under her leadership, the Spanish Honors Society grew in participation and impact, creating a welcoming environment for students to explore traditions, language and history. “Ms. Scarlato ran the club with great ease; it's one of the clubs that gives me the most peace,” junior Spanish Honors Society member Valeria Salazar said.
As the Hispanic community prepares for this transition, many express gratitude for her lasting influence and the values of respect, curiosity and unity she leaves behind. “We will miss her so much,” Spanish instructor Priscilla Carrera said.
Starting next week, Carrera will assume the temporary position at the Spanish Honors Society for two months until a substitution can be found, continuing Scarlato's mission to foster language learning and appreciation of cultural diversity. Carrera opined, “I am deeply grateful to Scarlato for her work. Her position is challenging, and I know we will have to start from scratch again,” showing appreciation and recognition for the work by Scarlato and the commemoration of her dedication.
