In honor of the lives lost on September 11th, 2001, Boone’s NJROTC program proudly participated in the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K on Saturday, September 6th. This event is organized by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors the legacy of Stephen Siller, an off-duty firefighter who heroically sacrificed his life during the tragic events of 9/11. Our cadets ran and walked alongside Public members, fully suited firefighters, and police officers in full gear as a living tribute to his courage and to all who made the ultimate sacrifice that day. For the past 24 years, the Siller family, together with countless others who lost loved ones on 9/11, has ensured that this 5K continues each year to preserve their memory and honor their enduring legacy.
The Story of Stephen Siller remains a powerful testament to bravery and selflessness. On the morning of September 11th, 2001, Siller was on his way to meet his brothers for a round of golf when he learned that the first plane had struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Without hesitation, he turned back toward Manhattan, determined to help. Though off-duty and delayed by heavy traffic near the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Siler strapped on approximately 60 pounds of firefighting gear and ran the 3.1 miles on foot to the towers. His actions exemplify the highest standards of courage, sacrifice, and duty - values that continue to inspire participants of the Tunnel to Towers run each year.
On Saturday, Cadet Commander Orbin Valentin and Cadet Enrico Prado Franca proudly represented our program at the annual run, honoring the lives lost and the heroes of September 11th. Cadet Commander Valentin showcased his dedication and endurance by earning an impressive 3rd place overall, while Cadet Prado Franca finishing 5th place overall. Both Enrico Prado Franca and Sol Valentin earned a trophy for 2nd place for their age group. Their achievements not only highlight their personal commitment to excellence but also pride and recognition for our entire unit.
Events like The Tunnel to Towers 5K remind us that the legacy of September 11th is not only one of tragedy but also of resilience, unity, and heroism. By participating, our cadets not only honor the sacrifices of Stephen Siller and countless others but also embody the values of service, perseverance, and leadership that define the NJROTC program. Their dedication ensures that the memory of 9/11 continues to inspire future generations to live with courage and purpose.

Each year during the week of September 11, our Criminal Justice Program dedicates time to reflect on the tragic events of September 11, 2001, ensuring that students not only learn about history—but carry its lessons forward with honor.
- 9th grade students explore the day through the lens of the United States Secret Service and President George W. Bush, gaining insight into the federal response and leadership under crisis.
- 10th graders focus on the bravery and sacrifice of FDNY and NYPD first responders, whose courage became a symbol of resilience.
- 11th grade students learn about the heroic passengers and crew aboard Flight 93, whose selfless actions saved countless lives.
On September 11, all grade levels participate in the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s Digital Learning Experience, connecting students to real stories and voices from that day. As a visible sign of respect, students wear their uniforms —whether September 11 falls on a Wednesday or not—standing united in remembrance of the 2,997 lives lost and the thousands more who perished in the aftermath. This tradition is more than a lesson—it's a promise: We will NEVER FORGET.

Our beloved “Kiss the Pig” fundraiser is back in full swing! This week, staff members rallied support and collected donations to raise money for food baskets that will go directly to Boone families in need.
The twist? The staff member who collects the most donations earns the honor of kissing a real pig at the football game on Friday. It’s a fun and spirited tradition that makes a meaningful impact in our community.
Every dollar counts, and every donation helps us spread kindness and care. Thank you to our generous staff and supportive families for making this event such a success year after year!

This year the participating teachers raised $2,913.06. Thank you to everyone who donated!
The top staff member, raising $834.27, was Dr. Maestre!

On Thursday, September 4, we had Mr. Travis Frosch join us to learn more about real world applications of gene editing in livestock. Mr. Frosch is the Senior Director of Scientific Informatics and Engineering at Genus, PLC. He explained the impacts that a virus names PRRS (or Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome) has on the pork industry globally. In the US, the virus causes $1.2 Billion of losses each year for pig farmers and producers. He gave us an overview of gene editing and explained the differences between gene editing and genetically modified organisms (or GMOs). Recently, Genus achieved the first ever approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to sell and distribute the pigs commercially in the United States. This was the first time this information has been shared with a high school anywhere in the world and it happened here at Boone High School!
