Boone High School Attendance Policies and Procedures Highlights

Student attendance directly affects student achievement. Therefore, Boone High School expects that students will attend all day, every school day.

Absences-student absences will be recorded as an unexcused absence until an acceptable excuse has been provided by the parent or guardian indicating the reason for the student's absence. The principal is authorized by the school board to accept only the following reasons for absence(s):

  • Illness, injury or other insurmountable condition
  • Illness or death of a member of the student's immediate family
  • Recognized ( or established) religious holidays and/or religious instruction
  • Medical appointments
  • Legal Appointments
  • Participation in an approved activity or class of instruction held at another site
  • Pre-arranged absences of educational value with prior approval from the principal

Pre-arranged absences- are requested in order to get academic work from teachers ahead of time. They will be requested with no less than three days in advance. A letter signed by the parent indicating the reason for and the length of the absence needs to be submitted to the attendance administrator who will approve or deny this request based on the academic needs of the student.

Absent Notes- In order for an absence to be marked excused, a parental note/doctor's note needs to be received in the Attendance Office 48 hours after the absence excusing the absence from school. Notes should include: name of student, grade level, student ID number, dates/ length of absence, reason for absence and a parent signature with parent phone number for verification purposes.

Students with 5 or more unexcused absences will be subject to attendance interventions that range from a parent letter to Court Referral.

Students leaving early- If a student needs to leave early they need to be signed out or sign out if they are of age of majority in the attendance office.

30 minutes before dismissal – unless there is an emergency, students will not be signed out 30 minutes or less prior to the dismissal bell.

Tardy students-students who are tardy to class will receive a tardy slip from the attendance office or from the discipline office. Students need to present their school ID's when requesting a tardy slip.

Driving license- Students with 15 or more unexcused absences in a 90-day period will receive notification from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles of license suspension. Students must be in attendance compliance for 30 consecutive school days to receive verification for license reinstatement.
